Launch announcement - usernames 🥸

TLDR. We’ve added usernames for all users. They’re unique across all of Macro so can be used in public and private projects. You don’t have to do anything for this change, and you can change your username here.

Why did we do this?

People have the same name! When referring to others in public projects there was no way to tell one Alex Smith from another. Usernames are global and unique, so if you type @tyro you always know it’s me.

Having unique identifiers also makes it a lot easier for us to implement Mentions. So you’ll be able to @ other users to bring them into discussions. You can track the progress of Mentions here.

What’s the UX?

• Usernames are now displayed where you previously saw full names. e.g. In comment posts, update authors, and project contributors
• Usernames consist of lowercase alphanumeric characters - no spaces or hyphens!
• You can change your username in Account Settings here

NB. Full names still exist and will be used in some places to provide extra context about the user.
